Shadowless vs Unlimited vs 1st Edition Pokémon Cards (2026)
By Owlex · · 7 min read
A Shadowless Base Set card has no drop shadow beside the artwork and no 1st Edition stamp; an Unlimited card has the shadow; a 1st Edition card has the stamp. As of November 3, 2026, a Shadowless Charizard sells for about 2.6 times an Unlimited copy ungraded ($1,027.00 vs $401.92), and a 1st Edition about 11.6 times ($4,651.53).
These are three print runs of the same 1999 English Base Set. Wizards of the Coast printed the 1st Edition run first, then a short Shadowless run with the stamp removed, then the Unlimited run with a redesigned card face (Bulbapedia). The artwork and card number are the same on all three, which is why sellers mislabel them and why the price gap catches people out.
You can tell the prints apart in under a minute with two checks: the stamp and the shadow. The rest of this guide covers the finer checks for cards without art windows, how much each print is worth, and how to avoid a faked stamp. Prices are PriceCharting averages of recent sold eBay and TCGplayer listings, checked November 3, 2026.
What is the difference between 1st Edition, Shadowless and Unlimited?
1st Edition is the first print run and carries a small black "Edition 1" stamp. Shadowless is the second run: identical to 1st Edition but without the stamp. Unlimited is the third and largest run, with a drop shadow around the art box and bolder HP and attack text (Bulbapedia).
| Feature | 1st Edition | Shadowless | Unlimited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print order | First | Second (transitional) | Third and later |
| 1st Edition stamp | Yes, below the left of the artwork | No | No |
| Drop shadow beside the art box | No | No | Yes |
| HP and attack text | Thin | Thin | Bolder |
| Trainer and Energy copyright line | As Shadowless | "© 1995, 96, 98, 99 Nintendo" | "© 1995, 96, 98 Nintendo"; a later run reads "©1999-2000" |
| Base Set Pikachu cheeks | Red or yellow | Red or yellow | Yellow only |
| Charizard #4 ungraded (USD, Nov 3, 2026) | $4,651.53 | $1,027.00 | $401.92 |

Shadowless exists only in English Base Set. Other languages and later sets went straight from 1st Edition to Unlimited, so "Shadowless Jungle" or "Shadowless Fossil" listings are mislabeled (Bulbapedia).
How do I tell if my Pokémon card is Shadowless?
A card is Shadowless if there is no dark drop shadow around the art box and no 1st Edition stamp. Lay it next to an Unlimited Base Set card: the Unlimited card has a shadow line framing the artwork, and the Shadowless card does not.
Check in this order:
- Confirm it is Base Set. The card number reads out of 102, for example 4/102 for Charizard.
- Look for the stamp. A small black "Edition 1" symbol sits just below the left side of the art box. If it is there, the card is 1st Edition.
- Look for the shadow. No shadow and no stamp means Shadowless. A shadow means Unlimited.
- Check the text weight. Shadowless and 1st Edition cards use thinner HP numbers and attack text. Unlimited text looks heavier and darker.
- For Trainer and Energy cards, read the copyright line. These cards have no art box shadow to check. Bulbapedia notes that Shadowless prints read "© 1995, 96, 98, 99 Nintendo" while Unlimited prints drop the "99", and a later Unlimited run reads "©1999-2000."
How much more is a Shadowless or 1st Edition card worth?
For Base Set holos, Shadowless copies sold for about 2 to 3 times the Unlimited price ungraded as of November 3, 2026, and 1st Edition copies for about 12 to 20 times. Commons follow the same order with bigger multiples: a Shadowless Pikachu is about 6.5 times an Unlimited one, a 1st Edition about 48 times.
| Card | Unlimited ungraded (USD) | Shadowless ungraded (USD) | 1st Edition ungraded (USD) | Unlimited Grade 9 (USD) | Shadowless Grade 9 (USD) | 1st Edition Grade 9 (USD) |

| Charizard #4 | $401.92 | $1,027.00 | $4,651.53 | $3,301.51 | $11,690.45 | $29,062.00 |
| Blastoise #2 | $95.35 | $287.75 | $1,250.00 | $1,025.67 | $3,000.00 | $8,548.74 |

"Ungraded" is an average across all raw conditions, so a clean copy sells above it and a played copy below. "Grade 9" is PriceCharting's average sale price for copies graded 9 on the 1-to-10 scale used by graders such as PSA, where a 9 means Mint.
Expect swings on the scarcest prints. The last five raw 1st Edition Charizard sales on PriceCharting ranged from $4,152.00 (October 6) to $12,700.00 (September 4), depending on condition. For a card-by-card view of every Charizard print, see how much Charizard is worth.
Is there an exception to the 1st Edition rule?
Yes: the holo Machamp. The original starter decks each included a foil 1st Edition Machamp (Bulbapedia), so it is the one Base Set holo where 1st Edition is common. As of November 3, 2026, a raw 1st Edition Machamp averaged $15.00 on PriceCharting, against $92.67 for a Shadowless copy (PriceCharting).
Collectors on Elite Fourum also note Machamp as the one 1st Edition Base Set card that can carry a drop shadow (Elite Fourum). For any other Base Set card, a stamp plus a shadow is a warning sign, covered below.
The second quirk is Pikachu's cheeks. Wizards recolored Pikachu's cheeks red for the first English print, and Bulbapedia estimates about half of the 1st Edition and Shadowless runs carry red cheeks, while Unlimited is yellow only (Bulbapedia). On October 11, 2026, a raw red-cheeks 1st Edition Pikachu sold for $828.45 against $330.85 for a yellow-cheeks copy the same day (PriceCharting).
How do I spot a fake 1st Edition stamp?
A genuine Base Set 1st Edition card has the stamp and no drop shadow, so a stamp on a card with a shadow is almost always an Unlimited card with a stamp added. Adding a fake stamp to a real Unlimited card is the most common 1st Edition fraud, because the stamp carries most of the value (Misprint).
Before you buy or sell a raw stamped card, check:
- Shadow. No drop shadow beside the art box (except Machamp).
- Text weight. Thin HP and attack text, as on Shadowless cards.
- Position. The stamp sits on the left side, directly below the art box. A stamp in the wrong place is a major red flag.
- Print quality. The circle and "1" are sharp with no ink bleed, and the ink sits in the card rather than on top of it with a different sheen.
- Size. Compare it with a stamp on a card you know is real from the same set.
For a stamped Charizard, Blastoise or Venusaur, buy a copy already graded by PSA, CGC or Beckett, since the grader has authenticated the stamp. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards covers counterfeit cards and fake slabs in more detail.
How much does misidentifying the print cost a seller?
Listing a Shadowless Charizard as Unlimited costs about $542 after eBay fees if it then sells at the Unlimited average, as of November 2026. eBay charges 13.25% of the total sale for trading cards up to $7,500, plus $0.40 per order over $10 (eBay).
| Listed as | Average sale (USD) | eBay 13.25% fee (USD) | Per-order fee (USD) | You keep (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Charizard #4 Unlimited | $401.92 | $53.25 | $0.40 | $348.27 |
| Charizard #4 Shadowless | $1,027.00 | $136.08 | $0.40 | $890.52 |
| Charizard #4 1st Edition | $4,651.53 | $616.33 | $0.40 | $4,034.80 |
Figures exclude your shipping cost, and eBay applies the 13.25% to the total amount of the sale, not just the card price. The rule for sellers is simple: put "Shadowless" or "1st Edition" in the title only after you have checked both the stamp and the shadow, and include a clear photo that shows the stamp area and the edge of the art box, since buyers will check both.
Should I grade a Shadowless or 1st Edition card?
Grade a Shadowless or 1st Edition holo if it is clean, because the grade multiplies an already higher base price. A Shadowless Charizard averages $1,027.00 raw and $11,690.45 in Grade 9, and even a Grade 7 averages $3,472.72 (PriceCharting).
The cheaper the card, the closer the call. A Shadowless Pikachu at $25.76 raw and $170.77 in Grade 9 has a $145.01 gap to Grade 9, and that gap has to cover the grading fee and shipping both ways, so check the edges and centering first. Frequently asked
How can you tell if a Pokémon card is Shadowless?
Look at the art box. A Shadowless Base Set card has no drop shadow around the artwork and no 1st Edition stamp, while an Unlimited card has the shadow and bolder HP and attack text. For Trainer and Energy cards, which have no art box, Bulbapedia notes the Shadowless copyright line reads "© 1995, 96, 98, 99 Nintendo" and Unlimited drops the "99".
Is Shadowless worth more than 1st Edition?
No. 1st Edition is the first and most valuable print, and Shadowless sits between 1st Edition and Unlimited. As of November 3, 2026, a raw Base Set Charizard averaged $4,651.53 in 1st Edition, $1,027.00 Shadowless and $401.92 Unlimited on PriceCharting. The one exception is Machamp, whose 1st Edition holo came in every original starter deck and averaged $15.00 raw.
How much is a Shadowless Charizard worth?
A Shadowless Base Set Charizard averaged $1,027.00 ungraded on PriceCharting as of November 3, 2026. Graded copies averaged $3,472.72 at Grade 7, $6,150.00 at Grade 8, $11,690.45 at Grade 9 and $24,808.28 in PSA 10. Recent raw eBay sales ranged from $877.86 to $1,995.00 depending on condition.
Are there Shadowless cards in Jungle or Fossil?
No. The Shadowless print exists only in English Base Set, according to Bulbapedia. Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Gym and Neo sets have 1st Edition and Unlimited prints only, so a listing for a Shadowless Jungle or Fossil card is mislabeled.
Can a 1st Edition Base Set card have a shadow?
Genuine 1st Edition Base Set cards have no drop shadow, with collectors noting the holo Machamp as the exception. A 1st Edition stamp on any other Base Set card with a shadow usually means a real Unlimited card with a fake stamp added. For expensive stamped cards, buy a copy already graded by PSA, CGC or Beckett.
