The most expensive Pokémon cards ever sold (2026)

By Owlex · · 8 min read

The most expensive Pokémon card ever sold is a PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator, which Logan Paul sold through Goldin for $16,492,000 on February 16, 2026, a Guinness World Record. Second is a PSA 10 "Raincoat" Art Academy Pikachu at $8.4 million in September 2026.

Both are Japanese promos that were never sold in booster packs. Most record cards were contest prizes or tournament trophies handed to a few dozen people, then graded in near-perfect condition decades later. "PSA 10" means the grading company PSA rated the card Gem Mint, the top of its 1-to-10 scale.

2026 has rewritten the record books. Every one of the 15 sales in the table below happened in 2026, and six of them in September alone. Card Ladder's all-Pokémon index rose 47% in the month to October 2, 2026. Most "most expensive" lists online still show 2021 and 2022 sales near the top. None of those older sales make this top 15.

What are the most expensive Pokémon cards ever sold?

These are the 15 highest public sales of single Pokémon cards that we could confirm from an auction house or a dated news report, as of October 2026. Prices include the buyer's premium (the fee the auction house adds on top of the winning bid) where the source says so.

A "Gold Star" is an ultra-rare holo from the mid-2000s EX-era sets, marked with a small star next to the Pokémon's name. CGC and BGS are grading companies like PSA, with their own 10-point scales.

Which big Pokémon card sales are left off the list?

We left out private deals and sales that no auction house has confirmed, because their prices cannot be checked. The ones you will see quoted elsewhere:

One sale is still live. A PSA 8 Gold 1st Place Trophy Pikachu in Goldin's 30th Anniversary auction was at $2,714,500 with buyer's premium on October 9, 2026, with bidding set to close on the evening of October 25 (US time). The same grade sold for $982,100 in March, so this lot alone shows how fast prices moved in 2026.

How much does the grade change a Pokémon card's price?

The grade is the single biggest price lever on a record card. Six Pikachu Illustrators sold publicly in 2026, and the gap between grades is large:

Illustrator gradeSale price (USD)DateMultiple of the March PSA 9
PSA 10$16,492,000Feb 202611.7x
PSA 9$5,000,000Sep 20263.6x
CGC 9$2,806,271Sep 20262.0x
PSA 9$1,406,250Mar 20261.0x
BGS 8.5$1,006,500Aug 20260.7x
PSA 8.5$727,120Mar 20260.5x

Two lessons follow. First, the only PSA 10 Illustrator sold for 3.3 times the best PSA 9, because only one copy has ever graded PSA 10. Second, the same grade sold for $1.4 million in March and $5 million in September. Timing and the number of serious bidders matter as much as the card. The same pattern holds at everyday prices: our guide to whether grading is worth it works through when the grade premium covers the fee.

What is the rarest Pokémon card?

The rarest Pokémon cards are one-of-one trophies, and they are not always the most expensive. Misprint lists a 2000 "Best in Japan" No. 2 Trainer personalized for a single winner, which sold for $137,500 in CGC 8. It is rarer than any Illustrator and worth a fraction of one.

CardCopies (approx.)Best public sale (USD)
"Best in Japan" No. 2 Trainer (2000)1$137,500 (CGC 8, 2023)
Super Secret Battle No. 1 Trainer (1999)7$156,000 (PSA 10, 2022)
Silver 2nd Place Trophy PikachuAbout 14$444,000 (PSA 10, 2023)
Pikachu Illustrator (1998)39$16,492,000 (PSA 10, 2026)
Raincoat Art Academy Pikachu (2015)100$8,400,000 (PSA 10, 2026)

Trophy counts and sales from Misprint (June 2026). The Illustrator was given out as a prize in three CoroCoro Comic contests: 23 copies in the first and 8 in each of the next two. The Raincoat Pikachu count is from Dexerto.

The Raincoat Pikachu is the clearest warning about reading too much into one sale. PSA lists 57 copies at Gem Mint 10, and earlier PSA 10s sold for tens of thousands of dollars in 2024 and 2025. One $8.4 million auction does not mean the other 56 are worth millions.

What are the most valuable modern Pokémon cards right now?

The most valuable modern Pokémon card with a real sales history is the Umbreon VMAX alternate art from Evolving Skies, at a TCGplayer market price of $2,285.50 as of October 2026. These are prices for raw (ungraded) Near Mint copies, which trade in far greater numbers than the record cards above.

"SIR" means Special Illustration Rare, a full-art rarity numbered above the set's official card count. Three warnings apply to this table:

  1. Modern prices are falling, not rising. Every TCGplayer card above lost value over the 30 days to October 6, 2026; the Umbreon ex fell $119.04 and the Umbreon VMAX $82.84. TCGplayer noted the last two Umbreon VMAX sales were almost $400 apart. Card Ladder's ultra-modern index was down 4% for the month while vintage rose 53%.
  2. Some headline prices rest on almost no sales. The 30th Celebration RGB Mew R shows a $6,000.27 market price with zero sales since release as of October 17, 2026. That is a listing, not a value.
  3. Pre-release prices collapse. The 30th Celebration Futuristic Rare Mew ex was tracked at $3,200 before release and $62 by October 10, and the Mewtwo ex fell from $1,000 to $50.

A grade still multiplies modern prices. PriceCharting shows the Mega Gengar ex SIR at $1,589.65 in PSA 10, which is $816.73 more than a raw copy before you pay PSA's grading fees and shipping.

What makes a Pokémon card valuable?

Four things set the price, and the record cards score highly on all of them.

  1. Print run. Fewer copies means fewer people can own one. Prize and trophy cards were never sold in packs.
  2. Grade and population. A grade turns condition into a number, and the population report (the grader's public count of how many copies hold each grade) shows how many share it. One PSA 10 Illustrator exists, which is why it made 3.3 times the best PSA 9.
  3. Character. Pikachu appears eight times in the top 15, and Charizard three. Umbreon and Gengar lead the modern market.
  4. Bidders at the moment of sale. An auction price needs two people who want the same card that week. September 2026 had six top-15 sales; a PSA 9 Illustrator sold for 3.6 times the March PSA 9 price.

Could I have a valuable Pokémon card at home?

You almost certainly do not have an Illustrator or a trophy card. Base Set Charizard is different, because it was printed in large numbers and many copies still sit in old binders.

Check these on any Base Set card:

  • 1st Edition stamp. A small black "Edition 1" symbol to the left, just below the artwork. Without it, the card is Shadowless or Unlimited.
  • Shadowless. No drop shadow along the right edge of the art box. Early prints lack it and sell for more than later ones.
  • Condition. Whitening on the back edges, scratches on the holo and soft corners each cut the value sharply. A heavily played 1st Edition Charizard is worth a small fraction of the PSA 10 above. Our Charizard price guide covers every major print.
  • Fakes. Record cards attract counterfeits. A raw "1st Edition Charizard" at a bargain price is a reason for caution.
