Gold Pokémon Cards: Are They Worth Anything in 2026?
By Owlex · · 7 min read
Some gold Pokémon cards are worth thousands of dollars, but most gold cards sold online are worth almost nothing. As of October 2026, official gold cards range from about $3 for a gold Hyper Rare item card to about $8,300 for a Gold Star Rayquaza. Gold foil "fan art" cards are unofficial novelties that list for a few dollars.
"Gold Pokémon card" can mean five different things: a gold Hyper Rare from a modern booster pack, a Gold Star card from 2004 to 2007, a 1999 Burger King gold-plated promo, a gold metal card from a collector box, or a fan-made gold foil card. Each has a very different value, so the first job is working out which one you have.
Most pages on this topic either hype "golden cards worth more than gold" or quote prices with no date and no source. Below are current sold-price figures for each type, a checklist to spot fan-made cards, and the math on whether grading pays.
What counts as a gold Pokémon card?
There are four kinds of official gold Pokémon cards and one unofficial kind. The table shows each type with a real example and its PriceCharting ungraded price as of October 30, 2026. "Ungraded" means a raw card not sealed in a grading company's case.
| Type | Made by | Example | Ungraded price (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Hyper Rare (Scarlet & Violet era) | The Pokémon Company, in booster packs | Counter Gain #249, Surging Sparks | $3.09 |
| Gold Hyper Rare (Scarlet & Violet era) | The Pokémon Company, in booster packs | Pikachu ex #247, Surging Sparks | $69.23 |
| 1999 Burger King 23K gold-plated promo | Licensed Burger King promotion | Charizard [Gold Plated] #6 | $54.99 |
| Gold metal card (2021) | The Pokémon Company, Celebrations Ultra-Premium Collection | Charizard #4, metal | $237.50 |
| Gold Star card (2004 to 2007) | The Pokémon Company, in booster packs | Rayquaza Gold Star #107, EX Deoxys | $8,289.48 |
| Gold foil "fan art" card | Unofficial, not The Pokémon Company | "Charizard VMAX Gold Foil Textured Display Card" | Listed new at $3.33 on eBay |
The spread is huge. A Gold Star Charizard at $6,125.00 is worth about 111 times a Burger King gold-plated Charizard at $54.99, even though both are "gold Charizard" cards.
How do you tell if a gold Pokémon card is real?
Check the card's numbering, finish and listing details. An official gold card from a booster pack is a normal paper card with a set symbol, a collector number and a rarity symbol. A fan-made gold foil card usually has none of these, and sellers often tag it as custom art.
- Look for a collector number above the set size. Gold Hyper Rares are numbered outside the main set, such as 247/191 for the gold Pikachu ex in Surging Sparks.
- Check the rarity symbol. In Scarlet & Violet sets, Hyper Rares carry a symbol of three gold stars, according to Bulbapedia.
- Check the back. A gold Hyper Rare or Gold Star card has the standard Pokémon card back, like any other card from a pack.
- Read the item specifics. One gold foil Charizard VMAX on eBay lists its game as "Fan Art" and its features as "Altered/Custom Art". Another seller describes its gold cards as a "Fan Art Card Collection" at $29.99.
- Be wary of gold metal versions of modern cards. CardGamer's 2023 guide says the only official gold metal cards were the Charizard and Pikachu from Celebrations, and that the many gold cards sold on eBay, Etsy and AliExpress are reproductions you cannot use in the game.
- Feel the weight. The same guide notes that metal cards feel noticeably heavier than paper cards, even in a sleeve.
Some people buy gold foil cards as display pieces, which is fine as long as you know what they are: unofficial items, not Pokémon cards. For counterfeit checks on regular cards, see our guide on how to spot a fake Pokémon card.
How much are gold Hyper Rare cards worth?
In Surging Sparks, the gold item and energy Hyper Rares sell for about $3 to $11 raw, while the gold Pikachu ex sells for about $69. A Hyper Rare is a full-art card with a gold background and an extra glitter foil layer, introduced as its own rarity in Scarlet & Violet. Before that, similar gold cards were classed as secret rares.
Prices from Surging Sparks show the range within one set, as of October 30, 2026 (PriceCharting):
| Surging Sparks gold Hyper Rare | Ungraded (USD) | PSA 9 (USD) | PSA 10 (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pikachu ex #247 | $69.23 | $80.50 | $297.00 |
| Alolan Exeggutor ex #248 | $10.88 | $30.00 | $91.96 |
| Night Stretcher #251 | $9.22 | $16.51 | $61.00 |
| Counter Gain #249 | $3.09 | $26.14 | $38.48 |
PSA 9 and PSA 10 are grades from PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) on its 1 to 10 scale. A 10 (Gem Mint) is a near-perfect card. In this set the popular Pokémon carries the price, and the gold item and energy cards stay cheap even when graded.
Are Burger King gold Pokémon cards real gold, and what are they worth?
They are gold-plated, not solid gold, and most sell for $15 to $60 raw. Burger King offered six 23K gold-plated cards for $1.99 each with any value meal from November 15 to December 31, 1999. Each came in a Poké Ball with a certificate of authenticity.
The six cards were Pikachu, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, Poliwhirl, Charizard and Togepi. They are licensed collectibles, but they are not playable trading cards. As of October 30, 2026, PriceCharting lists the Togepi at $15.00 ungraded and the Charizard at $54.99. Recent eBay sales of the Charizard ran from $33.95 to $108.63 between October 22 and 26, 2026.
Graded copies are a different market. The gold-plated Charizard's PSA 9 price is $1,575.00, about 29 times its raw price, but PSA 9s sell only about once a month. Many sold listings include the original Poké Ball. If you still have the ball and the certificate, keep them with the card and mention them in your listing.
How much are the gold metal Charizard and Pikachu cards worth?
The gold metal Charizard sells for about $238 raw and the gold metal Pikachu for about $135, as of October 30, 2026. Both came in the 2021 Celebrations Ultra-Premium Collection, which The Pokémon Company describes as including two commemorative cards made of solid metal showing Base Set Pikachu and Charizard.
| Celebrations metal card | Ungraded (USD) | PSA 9 (USD) | PSA 10 (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charizard #4 | $237.50 | $507.50 | $15,000.00 |
| Pikachu #58 | $135.45 | $311.50 | $9,200.00 |
The gap between PSA 9 and PSA 10 is extreme, which suggests clean 10s are hard to get on these metal cards. One recent Pikachu listed with a "chipped back" sold for $43.00 on eBay, so check the edges and back before you price yours. The same box also included a special gold Pikachu V and a gold Poké Ball card.
What are Gold Star Pokémon cards worth?
Gold Star cards are the most valuable gold Pokémon cards, worth hundreds to thousands of dollars raw. Of the original cards checked for this guide on October 30, 2026, prices ran from $661.01 for Regice to $8,289.48 for Rayquaza. A Gold Star card has a star symbol after the Pokémon's name. Bill's Archive counts 27 in the original English run, released from November 2004 to March 2007.
Official pull rates were never published. The commonly cited estimate is about one Gold Star per two booster boxes. Prices from PriceCharting:
| Gold Star card | Set | Ungraded (USD) | PSA 9 (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rayquaza #107 | EX Deoxys (2005) | $8,289.48 | $84,137.50 |
| Charizard #100 | EX Dragon Frontiers (2006) | $6,125.00 | $41,217.84 |
| Regice #90 | EX Legend Maker (2006) | $661.01 | $5,436.59 |
| Greninja #SWSH144 | Black Star Promo | $33.00 | $76.92 |
Rayquaza's raw sales vary widely with condition. A Near Mint copy sold for $7,500.00 on TCGplayer on October 26, 2026, while other October sales on eBay ranged from $8,289.48 to $27,836.00. The modern Greninja promo uses the same star symbol but is worth about $33, so check the set before getting excited. Gold Stars also appear in our list of the rarest Pokémon cards.
Should you grade or sell a gold Pokémon card?
Grade a gold card only if it looks flawless and a PSA 10 sells for well above the raw price plus the grading fee. PSA's Standard tier costs $59.99 per card for cards valued up to $1,000, with an estimated 90 to 100 business days, as reported in September 2026.
Here is the math on a gold Pikachu ex #247, using October 30, 2026 prices and the $59.99 fee, before shipping:
| Outcome | Sale price (USD) | Minus raw value $69.23 and fee $59.99 | Gain or loss (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell raw | $69.23 | None | $0.00 |
| Grades PSA 10 | $297.00 | $129.22 | +$167.78 |
| Grades PSA 9 | $80.50 | $129.22 | -$48.72 |
A 9 loses money, so grading only makes sense if you are confident of a 10. For a Burger King gold-plated card, the PSA 9 price of $1,575.00 is above Standard's $1,000 limit, so you would need a higher tier. See our guide to PSA grading cost for those prices. For Gold Star cards worth thousands, compare recent sold prices on eBay (turn on the Sold Items filter) and auction houses before you accept any offer.
To check a stack of modern gold cards quickly, a scanner app can identify each card and its version from a photo. Our comparison of the best Pokémon card scanner apps covers the options.
Owlex is a card scanner app for iPhone and Android that identifies Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece and Disney Lorcana cards, several in one photo, and shows each card's market value. If you have a binder with gold Hyper Rares mixed in, you can photograph a full 9-pocket page at once and see which cards are worth checking before you sell or grade.
